St. George or San Jorge!

Believe it or not St.George is not only the patron saint in England, but also in our hometown, Cáceres, Extremadura, Spain!!

Of all places!!

Every year Cáceres celebrates the festivity in honour of our patron saint, San Jorge on 23rd April.

The festival symbolises the Christian reconquest of the city, and combines historical facts like the dispute between Muslims and Christians with legends such as Saint George’s victory over the dragon.

On 22nd April there is a big Parade with Music and cardboard dragons, prior to the burning of the Main Dragon in the Square.

The streets of the city are decked out for the festivities, and the events include the ‘burning of the dragon’ in the Plaza Mayor square and dramatised re-enactments of the battle between the Muslims and Christians.

There is also a bonfire competition, between the different “barrios” neighbourhoods of the town and the search for the golden hens (two golden eggs which are hidden around the Old Part).

Jorge is also a popular name for boys in Cáceres, and many of them are named after the Patron Saint.

Feliz día de San Jorge!
